Quito, Ecuador, 1990
Vive y trabaja en Chicago, Estados Unidos.
Through his drawings, engravings and installations Matias Armendaris investigates the pauses and signs that implicate the poetic material of objects with its semiotic potentiality of metamorphosis. His work revolves around exploring the codes of language, comprehending these as units that constitute the object and interfere with relationships that the object establishes with that which lies outside it.
His oeuvres are presented as containers of endless spaces that make use of metaphors taken from science fiction to reflect about binary dynamics of power. His oeuvres include passages of a historical past that opposes facts known -socially and politically- and accepted ideological structures. This dualism of Matias Armendaris’ work confronts the viewer with certain perceptions of otherness existent in our society. And places the viewer in a space of singular accidents riddled with connections and associations between the real and the fictitious.
Recent solo shows include Mise en Abyme (2014); Nausea (2012); Cara y Cruz (2010). He has also participated in group shows such us Material Art Fair (2016); Expanded Non-Territory (2015); Al Final del Pasillo (2014); LindArt Artist Residency Exhibition (2013).
