N.A.S.A.L. is pleased to present 000, a solo exhibition by Cuban artist Alberto Checa, for NADA Miami 2024.

In 000, Alberto Checa (b. 1998) constructs an immersive world that explores the ceaseless, often invisible labor endured by marginalized bodies. Drawing from his Cuban heritage and the survival tactics devised during the Special Period of the 1990s, Checa transforms everyday materials—PVC pipes, plaster, silicone molds, and repurposed household items—into elaborate, utilitarian structures. These assemblages serve both functional and performative roles, blurring the lines between process and product.

Checa’s iterative performances are driven by sound, which acts as a catalyst for each activation. The documentation of these cycles is encased in plaster, challenging the hierarchy between ephemeral action and tangible object. Through these meticulous, labor-intensive systems, Checa foregrounds the futility of repetitive work, highlighting the absurdity and resilience embedded in acts of survival and creation. 000 is a testament to the inventive spirit born from necessity, reimagining the labor that sustains and confines, liberates and oppresses.
